Colorchrome on HGTV! Lil Jon Wants to Do What?
As Atlanta’s premier fine art printing and framing company, Colorchrome has had the opportunity to work with marquee talent throughout our 41 years in business, but getting to work with Lil Jon was not on our bingo card! Imagine our surprise when we got a call from the Lil Jon Wants to Do What? production team asking us to collaborate on an upcoming episode.
If you haven’t heard, Lil Jon Wants to Do What? is a home renovation show on HGTV where Lil Jon and Atlanta-based designer, Anitra Mecadon, along with Executive Producer Adam Bret, change ho-hum spaces into wild, energetic, imaginative spaces that blow away the home owners every time. Jon and Anitra came out of the gate hot with Season 1, showcasing off-the-charts creativity, design and style, so we were very excited to see just what those two had up their sleeves. And they did not disappoint!
Colorchrome’s Angela Mathis worked with our founder and owner, John Rhodes, Lil Jon, Anitra and Adam to make the design duo’s dreams come true for the lucky homeowners. When Jon, Anitra and Adam came to tour Colorchrome and view our capabilities, they already had some BIG ideas. They were envisioning large scale artwork for a nightclub and bowling alley for their basement episode – because… why not? Angela, John and the Lil Jon Wants to Do What? team were quickly bouncing around ideas to incorporate various materials and colors to make their fun, rich, beautiful concepts into a reality.
Jon and Anitra settled on four large scale pieces and a gallery wall of photos. We used a combination of direct printed acrylic, photos face mounted to acrylic and custom painted, and laser cut wood panels to create an entire wall. Jon & Anitra really gravitated towards double-sided direct printing on acrylic for the two largest pieces they wanted to be the focal point of the space. Printing the two main 56” x 80” acrylic pieces double-sided added a gorgeous depth to the portraits. The jewelry was all printed on top of the acrylic while the figures and backgrounds were printed behind the acrylic creating a layered effect. We added a hidden sub-frame so that the art “floated” on the wall.
Our UV flatbed printer, with white ink capabilities, created exactly the bold look Jon and Anitra wanted. The colors were electric and oh so Vegas which was the couple’s goal with the reno. The single portrait in the bar area was done as a metallic pearl photo print, mounted to acrylic with the same hidden sub-frame. We also used this process for the smaller photos that make up the gallery wall.
The bespoke laser cut wood artwork is featured in the color drenched “Disco Ball Nightclub Room”. Full sheets of ½” wood were painted in a custom Benjamin Moore purple and then laser cut to create screens which cover an entire wall. The screens were then backlit by the HGTV crew on site so they really pop.
Our team was on site to install the art so we were able to have our own mini “reveal” with Anitra who was absolutely over the moon about them. We were too! It was such a thrill to collaborate with Jon and Anitra and to meet the behind-the-scenes crew, all of whom are amazing, hardworking and so kind. We were lucky enough to have Jon reach back out for a second episode, where Angela was able to work one-on-one with Jon to bring his vision to life. Stay tuned for more info on that project! HINT: there was water involved.
